Backdated update 2: Photos from Paris

This is going to be huge, but I'll try to condense it. Dirt and unsavouriness aside, Paris is arguably the most picturesque city in the world, and we did do the entire tourist route (quite apparent in the photos too)...

The castle of St. Germaine en Laye and its sprawling grounds, on the edge of which live our gracious hosts.

Walking around town - I love the suburban area in which we stayed

Delightful shop display

Corner bistro near our place. Sundown is about 10pm, usually that's when you see people having dinner...

Day 1: On foot from Trocadero to the Louvre, everyone snapping away despite a misty, bleached-out fog-shrouded Paris.

Fog shrouded Seine

This is our destination. It would appear everyone's taking a picture of me taking a picture of them while standing in front of the Tuileries...

After a whole afternoon of searching, Spiffy found 3 friends, whereas everywhere you turn there's a picture of a horse. Bit of an under-representation going on here?

Paris presents a wonderful juxtaposition of old and new

The gigantic clock leftover from the Musee d'Orsay's train station days

Notre Dame - not quite as spectacular as the Koln Dom, but inside is quite nice

Walked by a Gardening Festival in the bowels of Paris. Apparently one of the top hobbies of the locals. I love how the pretty flowers, planted along roads, walkways and bridges add colour to the otherwise grey and weathered cities in Europe.

The Opera House, my favourite interior in all of Paris, plush and grand without being grotesquely overdone. Check out the stage!

The grand stairway of the Opera House

And one of the hallways

Fog lifted, but still cloudy skies. Hence a gloomy picture of the Eiffel Tower.

View of the Seine, wending through the sprawl that is Paris, from the 2nd platform.

Another view of Paris, this time showcasing its manicured lawns, and inevitable graffiti

All I will remember about the Galeries Lafayette

Sacre Coeur, a beautiful church in a beautiful district, with friendly fruit vendors, amongst other equally colourful stalls.

In the same district lies the Moulin Rouge

Caught market day for St Germain en Laye, and we lingered for a bit, taking in the sights and the sounds on the way to the bus stop of the bus to Versailles. Stalls run the gamut from fresh greens, colourful fruit, fresh produce and seafood, preserves, and array of cooked food, to clothes, jewellery, books, trinkets, swimwear. Take photos at the risk of running into irrationally irate shopkeepers...

Versailles, yet another gilded monstrosity

Interior art

The real Hall of Mirrors

Huge grounds, fountain show on weekends

Somehow the Parisian quest for orderliness doesn't sit well with me. I imagined this to be the perfect setting for that scene of the queen and Alice

L'Arc de Triomphe, last monument on our monumental list

Halfway down Les Champs Elysee
